unexplained files
I work on a Win98se op system, offline computer.
I just found in my root partition a large amount (over 1000) of files of the type:
Dir####### (no extension) and
File######.chk
Together about 75 Mb volume.
What are these files and can they be safely deleted?
Please advise

Hi
Quick answer is Yes delete the CHK files, but look here for more info:

What's happening is DOS is attempting to recover disk errors. It may be wise to invest in a new Disk drive pretty soon before some important system file gets trashed.
The directories should be left alone.

Hello jddziadik
I dont know how did your question reached my thread.
However, if you work with any edition of Word you can simply save the whole file in txt format. to do this go to "save as" in the file menu and in the slot at the botom chose "text only" and "save".
If you want to save a part of the file, select it by draggng the mouse over it, and in the right click menu chose "copy". Then open a new document, right click and "paste", and save the new document as txt, as explained above.
By the way, you don't need to convert the containts your file into txt, but simply "copy" it and "paste" as said above into the right place in you document.
good luck.
