I have just reformatted and re-installed windows 98,but cannot seem to get my sound card to work. The system does not seem to recognise it.I also dont know what type of sound card I have (under system/device controllers it only says = PCI multimedia audio device).

If I go to new hardware it tells me that the problem is that there is no driver. I then get send to the ms/windows site which tells me that it cannot find drivers for the device.

Also:
From the scan I notice that it says:

Total Memory Deteced in Hardware: ~512 MB
Memory Reported to Operating System: 255MB

is this a problem?

Do a hardware scan - someone else should be able to reccomend one (can't think of one off the top of my head - it'll tell you the make & type. Then go to the manufacturers site & donload the right drivers.

Try this please, download and install Unkown Device Identifier. It may be able to give you the make and model of your audio adapter. HTH

thank you ,,I download the unknown driver identifier and it worked ,,now ,hopefully I can get my sound working ,,well maybe ,,but thank you

help,,,,still cant get my sound to work ,,for some reason there are no master volume controls now on my computer ,,found one unknown drive for multimedia but its not doing anything ,,I have a HP ,pavilion ,6635 ,,can anyone help me to get sound working

i can't help you get your sound card working, but i have done just the same as you in the last few days, and it's a real p off. windows 98 re-install, no sound or graphics card, went to freewarefind and downloaded everest, a system information download and that told me everything in my comp, some things i didn't even know were there. you could try that, worked for me maybe it will work for you!!!!!!!!!........good luck.

ok went to freewarefind ,,and downloaded everest and then got the registry manic ,,sorry about my spelling ,,found lots of problems on my PC ,,so only thing I can do now is uninstall windows 98se and reinstall it ,,might do the trick ,,I hope ,,
