can't accept agreement in windows 98se install

    Hi there,
I reformatted my computer, and was in the process of installing windows 98se. When i got to the "license agreement" i couldn't select the "i agree" without a mouse? I tried the tab button, enter etc. Do you have any suggestions for me? I tried starting from the beginning again, but no difference...

    Thankyou for your time :0)

Doesn't this machine have a mouse?

If it does, what type is it? ie; Serial, PS2, Optical, USB, Wireless?

The TAB key should have brought you through the areas of selection. The SPACE bar will select/unselect the choice.

Is your keyboard USB or Wireless?

    Hi Dan,
Thankyou for getting back to me so promptly.. What led up to this point was...
My niece was playing a game on her computer and not listening to her parents to get off... the computer was shut down abruptly, and the next time my brother tried to log on, it would not boot up, with an error msg, something to the effect, that windows could not boot because it was missing an important file called "heimem"... he was trying to find out a way to get that file back on his computer... in the end he reformatted (his mouse worked fine on that computer before the major shutdown that caused all of this).... so he was installing windows 98se onto his computer, when it came to the license agreement part... it would not let him go down the list to accept the agreement, it didn't matter what he tried.. he did try all over again and the same thing happened...
You asked about the mouse... it is a usb... maybe because of what happened to the computer, its not recognizing the mouse now? or? I don't know... thankyou for reading and responding to our dilema :0)

If you want to use USB devices outside of the Windows environment (ie; Windows not started or running), USB capabilities have to be enabled at the machine level. (Before your O/S (Operating System) starts.)

Enter the bios and look for a setting similar to "LEGACY USB", and make sure it's enabled. If the machine isn't too old it should be in there somewhere.

If found and enabled, the mouse should work at that point.

Post back with your results and any further questions.

If he found, enabled, and saved the USB change in the bios it should have worked.

An alternative is an inexpensive USB : PS2 adapter.

Also, as I stated above, the TAB key should have brought you through the areas of selection. The SPACE bar will select/unselect the choice.

Are you starting the machine with a Win98SE Boot Disk*?

Did it come with the 98 CD?

*The above bootdisk image file is a self extracting file and has to be executed (run) from a running Windows machine in order to create the actual startup diskette on one of your floppy disks. (This image file produces the same bootdisk which 98SE creates.) This downloaded image file will format the floppy disk to ensure its integrity, write the files to the disk, then verify the file write, so it'll take a minute or three to create the bootdisk.

Ensure the floppy drive is set as the first boot device in the bios.

NOTE: When you boot a machine with this boot floppy, it creates a RAMDRIVE in system memory to contain DOS system tools/drivers. Thus it will move your "normal" CDROM device/drive letter "up" one level. (If your CDROM is normally E: it will be F: when booting with this bootdisk.)

The path to the found CDROM will be set with the bootfiles, so entering (example) A:\>f:\setup is the same as entering A:\>setup at the A:\> prompt. There is no need to include the cdrom drive letter. The path dictates that the instruction (command line input) will look at the CDROM for Setup before it looks elsewhere. The CDROM device letter will be assigned near the end of the floppy boot process, right after MSCDEX is loaded.

Yes he bought a USB adapter and it worked fine after that...

Thanku for your help it was very much appreciated when we really
    needed it...
    ================================
Unfortunately now, he has brought his computer to us to see if we
can get it booted up, put on drivers etc...
    BUT!!..
His computer is an IBM Aptiva, probably a 2001 or so....
When we first booted it up, the IBM Aptiva screen came up, followed by a few unreadable white symbols/letters not words in the upper left hand corner but it would not post... so we booted it up again.. this time it beeped 5x, nothing came up on the screen... we have tried narrowing things down, but still cannot figure it out... most of the time now it beeps 5x followed by nothing on the screen, and then sometimes it does the IBM Aptiva screen followed by nothing, or no beeps followed by nothing!! The few letters/symbols up on the top left hand of the screen only happened the first time we booted it here....
Do you have any idea what we can do to try and boot up the system.. My brother had to reformat his computer and installed windows 98se back onto it... but now this...
We look forward to hearing back from you, and again thanku for the earlier help you gave us :0)

Sorry, I've been off line for over two weeks - ISP equipment problems.

What is the exact Aptiva model number?

Are the beeps all the same in duration(length - short/long)?

Are there any pauses between the beeps?
