problem installing win98 on laptop
Hi,
You all are my last hope. I have a Compaq laptop 2570US that originally had winxp on it. I decided to try to dual boot win98 and winxp. I formatted my hard drive and now win98 won't install. It goes all the way to the "installing plug and play" window and I get the Blue screen of death with the message "fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:FF02847B" Press any key to continue but when I do everything freezes. I've been trying to get around this screen for days with no luck. Any help would be amazing.

It seems that a few other people have had this problem when downgrading a machine that originally shipped with XP but only one answer shows up in Google:
Go into the BIOS and disable Advanced Power Management (APM) / ACPI. I would also suggest switching off anything else that you could do without for the initial install - disable any integrated peripherals through the BIOS, e.g. sound and modem. Also, if you have different levels of support for the parallel port, set it to the lowest one as this is going to require less from Windows 98 from a driver and hardware resources point of view.
Once you've got Windows running successfully, you can, of course, go back into the BIOS to switch those things on one-by-one.
Let us know if that helps

So, I'm going to relay this just to get it in my head; You purchased a PC that had XP, formatted the drive-Im gonna stop there for a sec and ask how did you format it? Did you format via a DOS box? Or did you use something else?-to continue, you decided to to a clean install of WIN98-agian, im gonna pause for a bit. Did you created proper partitions? Is it a legit copy? Have you created a partition with which the file system will be compatible with both OS'? Also, WIN XP does not support another OS on the same partition. So be sure to create two partitions. Let us know if you still aren't getting it

Thanks for the responses,
Indeed a lot of people seem to have this problem but I haven't seen anybody say that they resolved it. I was able to boot in safe mode and turned off whatever I could but it didn't help.
Yes to all the other questions. legit copy etc. I have an older Micron desktop that I set up as dual boot just last week as practice for doing the laptop. Everything went smoothly. As far as the laptop goes, There is only one partition and I used the Win98SE startup disk to format the drive. Once I get 98 working I intend to use Partition magic to partition the drive so that I can install WinXP....IF I ever get 98 working. Any further suggestions would be appreciated before I just give up. I imagine that is what a lot of people have done.

I see there's been no activity on this thread for a couple of weeks, so I'll ask a couple of questions;
Are you installing 98SE or 98FE?
What size is the hard disk in the Compaq? 40GB?
(As per: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...reg_R1002_USEN )
I suggest you use the Updated Fdisk.exe utility: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263044/en-us to partition your hard disk. You must "run" the 263044usa8.exe file to extract the new fdisk. Since this was designed to be run on a 98 platform, it replaces the "current" fdisk utility in the C:\windows and C:\windows\command directory. (But not the C:\windows\command\ebd directory.) Since you don't have this file structure, and it may cause undesirable results on an XP machine, you can download the extracted fdisk utility from here;
http://www.d-a-l.com/dan/FDISK.EXE. Simply copy it to your 98 bootdisk to replace the older fdisk. Once you get 98 loaded, do a search for fdisk.exe and replace any copies found with the updated one from your bootdisk.
What size partition did you make for 98? I'd suggest a size of 6GB to 8GB Maximum for 98. (If you choose 8GB, (8000MB while in fdisk) you should end up with a partition around 7.8GB when it's formatted.
"fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:FF02847B"
These errors often occur when installing a "stock" or retail version O/S on a proprietary machine. Generally speaking, proprietary machines use their own version of the O/S ~and~ drivers for the O/S as their (onboard device chips) hardware is "tweaked" to run the way they desire it to run, on their "tweaked" motherboards and their "tweaked" bios. Errors in the 0028 memory range nearly always mean that a device driver is the problem. (Further below.)
I take it that you've followed DJNafey's advice and disabled ACPI in the machines bios.
(For above) Turn off/disable any peripheral devices (all other than display - sound, modem, LAN, etc) while you're in the bios. This will help in getting by the fatal exception errors.
Also (while you're in the bios), check for an entry for "Plug and Play aware OS?" If found, select YES. Then save your settings and exit.
NOTE: your model has no drivers listed for 98. The HP page takes you here;
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...t=326355&os=20 to further ID your model. If you can't find drivers, there may be none if the machine was designed around XP. There are sometimes other means (with a few exceptions) to get the hardware working.
Post back with your results and any further questions.
