mouse movement causes laptop to glitch

    hey all,
i just picked up a gigantic ancient toshiba satellite laptop (model #315CDS) that is running win98 se. i'm using it for sequencing audio and midi, which it can do fine, as long as i don't use an external mouse. using the built in pointstick there are no problems, but if i plug in an external mouse to the ps/2 adapter, every time i move the mouse cpu usage spikes and seriously messes up the audio output and timing of events. ive tried both a laser and a ball mouse, both have the same problem. i wanna be able to use the laptop for live performance and the pointstick just isn't gonna cut it

is there any way to make my computer spend less resources on communicating with the mouse?

    Welcome to D-A-L.

I was offline for more than two weeks due to ISP hardware problems so I'm just catching up on things. (There's not too many other Win 98 "dinosaurs" here, and that's why no one else has been by.)

I've done a search on the Toshiba (U.S. site) for your posted model and received 0 results. They had no visible archives to search either.

Open Device Manager. Are there any yellow exclamation marks anywhere?
