I've been trying to help my cousin fix his computer over the phone. It has windows millenium and has the same problems as the person in this post http://www.d-a-l.com/help/showthread.php?t=49553 I have tried the fixes from that thread and they didn't work so we tried a reinstall of me, this got to 65% then came up with an error message about a general protection fault. I'm guessing the hard drive needs replacing but has anyone got any ideas before we do that.

what specs has the machine got?

he doesn't know i'm afaid, he's not very good with computers and i live too far away to have a look

has he got all the discs to reformatt the drive if need be?

(be aware formatting the drive they'll loose all data on the machine)

yep, he says he's tried reinstalling ME, but now you mention it he may not have tried formatting first, i'll get him to try it, thanks
