    how safe is windows 98

    Hi all

I hope I'm not going over old ground - but I am becoming very worried about 98 now that Microsoft has disowned it.

Is it still safe to use this OS or should one think about upgrading?

Also, are there any websites extant which can offer support and advice to 98 users?

    Thanx in advance from

    Hippocrat

depends on what you want to do with it, M$ no longer support it with updates but is is about 10 years old.

will your machine run XP it's supported with all updates and security is a lot more advanced than 98.

    My two cents worth: ;>)

98SE was (and still is IMHO) the most stable O/S Microsoft ever produced. Compare the number of updates/patches with any other Microsoft O/S.

All updates etc are still on the MS site. You have to dig for them but... Many people still use it, and if you run proper internet securities (AV/Firewall mostly), it's quite safe. MalWare producers etc don't target it as much any more due to it's age. Spyware/AdWare is a problem with any O/S, but face it, tracking cookies etc are what make most sites available. The ad's pay for the sites existence.

Windows 2000 was the embryo for XP (file system structure and security). The advent of XP made the task of finding/loading drivers much easier, as well as it being more user friendly.

If you wish to change, as brain_damage stated:
"will your machine run XP it's supported with all updates and security is a lot more advanced than 98."
