computer keeps hanging at..........windows 2000 start up. it should next open to desktop, but every attempt to reboot hangs at this spot. HELP!

Can you boot it into Safe Mode?

Do you have the Microsoft 2K CD or an OEM Recovery CD?

i'm going to try to boot to safe mode right now and i have no disk's for 2000 or recovery,

Because I have these links open I will post this:

If you cannot access Safe Mode about your only chance is to repair the Boot Sector from the Recovery Console.

You would need to create these 4 floppy boot disks for 2K:

Windows Boot Disks. 2000 And NT Setup Disk Sets

Then read Microsoft's Description of the Windows 2000 Recovery Console

I would first try FIXBOOT then FIXMBR if the former fails.


If all the above fails then an Operating System CD would be necessary to reinstall or repair.

Short of purchasing a new Windows OS there is always Ubuntu which is free although not all windows programs will run on it.

thanks i'll try this route. i did get to safe mode and tried to reboot in that mode, but it hung their as well. also tried rebooting in last known good with no luck......thanks
