dan ...i haven't rebooted since the trouble started. what happens simply is that when i click on "shut down" or "restart", i get no response.

But windows continues to run?

Try hitting Ctrl/Shift/Esc (all at once) and choosing "Shut down".

false alarm. i just rebooted with no problem.
