    Hello, and Welcome to D-A-L.

    Start your machine in Command Prompt Only. Do this by either;

    Holding the Ctrl or F8 key during the boot process. This should give you the Windows 98 Startup Menu. Choose Command Prompt Only.

    or,

    While in Windows, go to Start, Run, type in msconfig. When the window opens click on Advanced near the lower right hand corner. Place a checkmark in the box for "Enable startup menu". This will give you this menu on every boot. (To remove the menu simply reverse these steps.

    When you get to the C:\> prompt, type in scandisk/all/autofix/nosave/nosummary and hit the ENTER key. Allow scandisk to finish checking all drive partitions. When it's complete, restart your machine in Safe Mode (from the Windows 98 Startup Menu) and run defrag.

    It's best to use the Defrag program from Windows ME, available here; http://www.cyberus.ca/~danpenny/MEdefrag.zip
