Win2k not recognizing 40gig hardrive etc

Old computer tech here, which means I know nothing anymore. Having said that, I went to update win'98se to win2k and the thing doesn't recognize more than 2 gigs of the 40 gig drive. I don't remember what to do. Also, windows update won't update my win2k. Yes it's mine, I've had it since school back in 2000. I probably couldn't be anymore vague and I apologize in advance for my ignorance. Much thanks to anyone that can help.

Welcome to D-A-L where no apologies are necessary!

Just to clarify: you ran an upgrade CD of Win2K on a 98SE?

What was the file format in 98SE? FAT? FAT32? Did the upgrade allow the change to NTFS?

If you have the 98SE CD you should run a Clean Install of 2K. As it is an upgrade CD it will ask for proof of a previous Windows e.g. 98SE. You just need to insert the CD so the setup will see it and continue to load a fresh Clean install.

If you get here choose to Format into NTFS. This could be an issue in GB size as the times they have a-changed.

As to Windows Update: what exactly happens? Do you get error messages? If so can you post them verbatim please.

Maybe this is a coincidence but didn't Win98 have a 36GB / 37GB partition limit? Sounds like Win2000 is seeing the bit that's left over.
