You say you have a working XP computer as well?

You might try making a KNOPPIX Live CD which you could boot your ME with to extract any data if you need it.

Get the 5.1.1 CD ISO

This is an ISO image. You will need ISO burning software to burn the image. If you do not have Nero or equivalent here is a free ISO burner:

This is a large download and burn. Each process may take up to an hour to complete depending on your system speed etc.

Again what this will do is allow you to boot that HP computer in order to recover any data that you want. It will not aid in fixing the ME operating system. At this point I think your options there are limited to ordering Recovery disks from HP or else installing a different Operating System.

Besides KNOPPIX there is Ubuntu if you want to install a new Operating System (FREE) on that computer:
