Internal Stack Overflow Error
hello all. I have recently tryed to install windows 98se on a machine and at the end of the install when windows is going to detect the plug and play equiptment and go to the desk top I get the error. Internal Stack Overflow Error and it says something about the config.sys file. I looked on the windows site and the values that it says on there have made no diffrence. Does anyone have any idea? thanks for any help.

Hello, and Welcome to D-A-L.
I take it you mean the values from; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/145799/en-us
One of the first things to try is renaming the c:\config.sys and c:\autoexec.bat files so they are not processed during the (Windows) boot. These files are not really required unless (you have ~really old~ hardware (non-ATAPI CDROM etc) or are running a boot time Anti-Virus. If the problem persists after this exercise, you may have a hardware conflict.
Boot the machine with a Win98SE Boot Disk and when you get to the A:\> prompt, type in c: and hit Enter. Your prompt should now be C:\>.
Type in attrib -h -r -s config.sys and hit Enter.
Then type in attrib -h -r -s autoexec.bat and hit Enter.
Type in ren config.sys config.ysy (hit Enter), then ren autoexec.bat autoexec.tab and hit Enter. Remove the boot floppy and restart the machine.
Post back the results.

I am sorry for the long wait for a reply. I tryed your suggestion and at first I had renamed the config.sys folder to .ysy manualy so when I tryed it it found the config file but not the autoexec file I thought it was because I also renamed it manualy to .tab. so I went in through safe mode and changed both back to what they should be and then tryed to boot from floppy and when I typed your suggestion in I got file not found on both files.

Sorry to be away for so long. I've been absent for a month with family matters and just got back last week. I'm slowly catching up on the threads which have slipped into the cracks.
Please provide a directory listing for your C: drive.......
If neccessary, boot the machine with an EBD (Emergency Boot Disk as mentioned in my #2 response) and when you get to the A:\> prompt, type in c: and hit Enter. Your prompt should now be C:\>.
At the C:\> prompt type in dir/a/o/p. If you get a listing, put a blank formatted floppy in the A:\ drive and then type in dir/a/o> a:\dirlist.txt. Bring this floppy to the machine you're posting on and copy the contents of the dirlist.txt file and paste it into your next post.
