Totally messed up computer!!!!
A few days ago, I discovered that I have four trojan horse dialers on my system. Then, yesterday, I got the following error message: Helpctr has caused an error in OLE32.dll and will close.
This message comes back regularly. I use AVG virus scan, which found the trojans. Today, I tried to download Spybot S & D to clean try to clean them out. I downloaded and was told that the installation file was corrupted and to download another copy, which I did! Same result!!!
I tried to use the System Restore to go back before the trojans appeared but I cannot open it.
Where do I go from here besides out the window???? Thanks for any help you can give me. By the way, yesterday when i tried to boot up, i got the message that no operating system existed and to hit any key to continue????

You could try and follow the instructions in this thread
http://www.d-a-l.com/help/showthread.php?t=32403
and start a new thread in the HijackThis section.
However if you cannot boot into Windows a Clean reinstall might be necessary.

Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately, my problem is far worse than even I thought it is: (this will be kind of long...sorry!) First, I cannot download ANYTHING because about half way thru, I get a message stating that the installation files are corrupted and to try to get another version. Second, I cannot click on and open any links, neither on the Net or in email. I am getting one error message after the other re USER.EXE and various .dll files. I am running AVG Free (have been for more than a year) and now, every other day or so, I tells me that I have four Trojans, of which it supposedly heals 3 but then they come back again! I installed Trojan Remover 6.5.5 and that tells me that there are no threats on my computer. I tried to install Spybot S&D but cannot download it, as above. The recommended using Regalyzer but that came thru with External Exception 80000003. Do you have any idea what could be going on here? Oh, yeah, I can't print anything when I am on the Internet. I can print when I am offline, so no printer problem. One more thing: whatever is going on with me is also starting to happen with another computer we have (also ME) i.e. the errors and not being able to download and install. I tried to get Belarc yesterday but that we no go either. PLEASE, PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME??? I CANNOT AFFORD TO BUY A NEW COMPUTER OR HAVE COSTLY REPAIRS DONE TO THIS ONE!!! THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

I would suggest Clean Installing your ME.
-
How do I do that??? Is it possible that these problems could have started with my dialup ISP? I can't help wondering why my other computer is developing the same set of problems.

If the two computers are networked then any virus is easily transfered.
Was ME pre-installed on this computer?
If so you should have the manufacturer's Recovery disk.
If you have a retail Microsoft ME then you should have that disk.
Boot the disk and follow the prompts for a Clean (Full) Install.

My two computers are NOT networked!!
I got these computers secondhand. They were both loaded with ME and I have neither a Recovery disk nor do I have the retail version. I will have to see if someone can lend me a copy of something or other. Can't afford to buy one, you know!
Thanks for your help.

To me it looks like your HDD is failing .. Download the "diagnostic tool" for your HDD make and burn onto CD (ISO image file) - reboot from it pressing F8 (F4 on some) after the first screen has been shown and choose the CD drive as the bootup drive. Then choose to run a thorough scan. Post back the results:

For booting up you can follow this: http://www.easydesksoftware.com/recovery.htm

Thank you for your input. However, a few days ago AVG seems to have gotten rid of the Trojans that were plaguing me and now everything seems to be running just fine. Thanks again!!!
