Unhappy Help my Win98 keeps freezing

Every time I start up my PC within 10 minutes it freezes. Onces it freezes and I restart it the freezing in 5 minutes. Then I restart and it freezes in 2 minutes. I have had a friend try to reformat it but he attempts to go into the bios it still freezes. What do I do?

I would guess a dodgy or old piece of equipment is to blame if it freezes the BIOS. The fact that it takes less time each time you restart tells me that something may be getting too hot.

The only way of deducting what the problem is, is to take the PC apart and replace each component with a spare or new piece until you find out what is wrong with it, then buy that new part.

If you dont have any spares examine the following.

    1) Take PC Case apart to reveal all internal equipment.
    2) Switch on the PC so that it tries to boot up.
    3) DONT TOUCH any IC's (chips) or wires while computer is switched on.
    4) Check every fan is operating correctly (spinning - blowing air)
    5) Hover your hand around the different components to see if anythings getting hot.

If a fan is failing to work, replace it straight away. If theres no fans failing, then check (hover your hand over) everything else in the case. If it feels hotter than a fresh cup of tea, replace it, or try and keep it cool somehow. Find out why its getting hot. When looking at your fans check for serious dust build-up, this can block air flow between fans and heatsink, and can cause overheating in most cases. If there is dust build up get the hoover out with the smallest adapter you can find to get into the tricky spots and suck it all out.

If all fans are working, theres no serious dust, and nothings getting hotter than a hot shower at your local swimming baths, then the only way to deduce the faulty component is trial and error with spares. If you can get hold of spares, id check them in this order,

    1) Try different power supply. Some power supplies do fail after a few years.
    2) Try different memory. Memory can easily get errors which are capable of bringing the PC to a halt.
    3) Try just disconnecting the power cables to your cd drive and hard drive, and see if the computer still freezes in the BIOS. If it does, i wouldnt suspect either of the drives, but i'd say it was the power supply not sending enough power to the other components.
    4) If you can - try a different CPU.

If you check all this and still cannot find a fault, then let us know,
If you can't check everything because you cannot get hold of any spares, post back with what you have checked and what you've found.

    Best of luck,
    Steve.

That's pretty much the way that I would tackle this problem too. Another good answer - thanks Steve

Thanks for the good advice. First I'll try removing the power supply from the cd drive and hard drive then I'll replacing parts to see what the problem is. Thanks a lot I really appreciate the help.
