ME won't boot

    ME won't boot

I apologize if this has been covered. I did a search but didn't find anything.

Background: I have a Dell desktop 700MHz with dual HD's. The big drive boots off XP Home and the small drive boots using ME. It has been a good arrangement so far, as the kids use ME and ME doesn't see the XP drive so nothing ever gets stored there. Recently installed and ran Adaware 6.0 and Spybot on the ME system. Spybot seemed to run OK; Adaware hung up when doing the quarrantine of the files it found. Now when it boots, it will only get as far as the first Windows ME screen that comes up and goes no further. It will not boot into safe mode, either.

I have a disk labeled "Reinstallation CD, WinME" but it will not reinstall ME. It gives an error message "SU0013".

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The SU0013 error, if I recall correctly, means that the hard disk cannot be detected. Could you go into the BIOS (Setup screen) to check that both of your hard drives are being reported correctly? To enter the BIOS, restart the PC and watch for the message saying "Press F2 for Setup" or something similar IMMEDIATELY after the monitor switches on. If you don't see the message, it was probably displayed before the monitor warmed up in which case you should restart the PC and keep pressing F2 as soon as the power comes on.

Let us know how you get on with that

I finally figured out how to access the BIOS screen (hit DEL while the DELL screen is on) but I'm not sure how to answer your question. I only see where it talks about the IDE controllers being active, not hard drives, per se. FWIW, it says the #2 IDE controller is inactive or something like that.

    Thanks.

This might be the cause of the issue. Could you go back into the BIOS and enable any IDE controllers that are listed and then see if that resolves the problem?
