    system requirements help!

I have windows me. I am having problems with an attachment that I received through word pad today. I cannot open this attachent with any programme and I know that my computer needs updating. Is there any way that I can just update wordpad? I haven't had any other problems with downloading attachments - or is this just the start.
Can you think of anything that may be able to help me with this?
    Thanks

I'm sorry but I have no idea how to find that??? Could you explain?
It comes up with "Wordpad has caused an error in MSWRD832CNV. Wordpad will now close."

This is what comes up on the screen when I try to download the attachment. Do you think if it is a newer computer with a better system that this could be the problem and why mine can't open it?
Thanks for your help. I have the same problem if I open, save to computer and it won't let me open it with anything else either?

Yes, look for the file ending i.e. text files are ending with .txt

The file extensions must be showing in your settings for this to show.

    It says "Training materials.doc"???
It is a "word" document. I do not actually have word installed on to my computer but have Lotus Smartsuite. I have received word doc's before though and it hasn't been a problem.
I did have a problem sending out a word processing document as an attachment to this particular address, so I had to type it with wordpad. It is the same address that has now sent me an attachment.
Does that make any sense? I hope so.
    Thanks again.

Try saving the attachment off of the email into your "My Documents" folder. Then open up Lotus WordPro from the Windows Start Menu. Once you're in WordPro, go to the File menu, select Open and then change the File Type option to one that allows you to open Microsoft Word documents (DOC files). Then browse to your "My Documents" folder and open up the "Training Materials.doc" file.

That should do it. If it doesn't work, then the person that sent you the file has written it in a newer version of Microsoft Word which your older version of Lotus Smartsuite cannot open. In this case, you can download a free Microsoft Word Viewer program which lets you open Word documents. It's quite a big download but, if you need it, you can get it from Microsoft's web site at http://www.microsoft.com/download. Type in "Word Viewer" into the filter box to search the list of available downloads.

Let us know how you get on

Here it is: MS Word Viewer 2003 (replaces previous versions)

As advised well by DJNafey, follow his/her steps outlined and if that doesn't work you can always download and view it with this utility
