Exclamation Screen switches off after startup is complete

Basically, I log on (the CPU is idle at the log in box point - a relevant idea for later, as this confuses me), and AS soon as, the computer has finished loading up the startup items, the screen switches off, and the green tower light switches off, even though the tower is actually still on, (I can hear it), and I can open n close the cd rom drive.

However, I have usually been able to deal with the problem, by setting up a whole system anti virus scan, which enabled me to use the computer for about 20 minutes on end, before the screen and tower light would go off, (now, i can only use it for 4 minutes) although, it is weirdly on.

The same effect occurs in safe mode.

I primarily thought it was a hardware problem with the processor and that I have to increase its usage in order to keep it on; however this doesn't correlate with the computer not switching off during log in, as there is hardly any immense processor usage then.

I tried reinstalling windows ME, but it would always get stuck on a particular line in DOS, and not even begin properly.

I tried having other user names, and disabling most of the startup items - that didn't work either.

I'm not sure what the problem is...
    Any Ideas?
    Abs!

Yes, it seems a hardware problem. Usual suspects: cables, monitor, PSU and also overheating.

Is it a TFT or a CRT monitor?

Have you tried switching cable ends around and/or changing cables?

Can you still hear any sound from the monitor, anything moving in th background at all, or is it totally off?

Basically, the screen is completely off - no sound or anything.

I believe it's a TFT. No, I haven't tried switching over the cables - I dont think that is the problem.

It's just weird that in safe mode, the same thing occurs, even though there's no hardware acceleration - however, everything is fine on log on...
