    Question error pop-ups

I'm baaaack! Thank you so much for the last help you gave. You listened and gave good advice. Without your input, I wouldn't have even tried to figure out the problem. Now for the new problem. It's not new to me, but if you can help me solve it,THAT WOULD BE GREAT! I'm getting a pop-up that reads"this program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down. Most of the time I click on the close button and it goes away. Sometimes the message freezes on the screen, so I just move it out of the way. What do you think might be the problem?

Is there any information as to which program?

Does it occur only on the system startup or anytime?

Does it occur only when you're "online" to the net?

Hi Dan. My name is Shirley. When these pop-ups come on screen, it can be a different program each time, and they happen any time. I don't have to be on-line.

    Hello again Shirley. Based upon what I've read regarding your previous problem(s), and since you've already run sfc with significant results;

"...This is what I got: Folders examined 183 Files examined 1589 Files added 684 Files removed 0 Files updated 195 Files restored 0 Changes ignored 1...",

I suggest an "over the top" reinstall of Windows 98.

With this type of reinstall you DO NOT format C:. This install will leave all your programs, data, and personal settings intact.

All statements below assume you have 98 on a CD. It's possible you may have the setup files on your hard disk in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs Or C:\Options\Cabs. A search for WIN98*.cab will turn up the files location if they are on your hard disk. You will need your 98 Product Key as well.

You can run it from within Windows:
Put the 98 CD in your drive and navigate to and run x:\win98\setup(.exe). (x = your CDROM drive letter. Or, run it from the found C:\***\cabs\win98 directory on your hard disk.)

It will ask you if you want to save your existing DOS and Windows files in case you wish to revert back to your previous installation. If you have the drive space do so.

If you have any questions, problems, or require further information post back.

Hi Dan. I haven't had time to try what you told me, but there is one question...what is a product key?

The Product Key is the 25 digit code that comes with the O/S (Operating System) CD. This key allows the Validation/installation of the O/S. Usually in the form of XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX OR XXXXX-OEM-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.

I've attached a key finder. Just unzip it somewhere (Desktop?) and run it. Your key for your installation will pop up in a small window. Write it down.

Hi Dan. Shirley here. I just tried to open the file for the key finder and a pop-up came up and said the file was not a valid 32 win file. Now what do I do?

Sorry, the one I sent was for XP. Try this one, it should work in 98....

Same procedure; Just unzip it somewhere (Desktop?) and run it.
