So the Internet Connection Wizard works on your Windows 98 PC but the help file isn't installed for it?
Hmmm.
Not sure where to start with that one. A few years back, I would have found another Windows 98 PC and just copied the appropriate HLP file out of the Windows directory. But it's not so easy to find someone you know who is running Windows 98 these days.
It's a bit of a long shot but see if Windows System File Checker spots the missing file and re-installs it for you. Click the Start Menu, select Run and, in the box, type sfc and click OK. It will scan your PC for any files not matching the original Windows 98 versions. Bear in mind that this will also give you a message for every file that has been changed due to Windows Updates, Internet Explorer updates, etc. So you'll have to tell it not to replace most of the files .... until you spot one that has the name you are looking for. It will probably include "ICW" in the name and "HLP" as the extension.
Hope that helps.

... or it might have a CHM extension.

Hi. Shirley here. I tried your suggestion. This is what I got: Folders examined 183 Files examined 1589 Files added 684 Files removed 0 Files updated 195 Files restored 0 Changes ignored 1 I will try the internet connection again and get back to you. Thank you so much for your help.

684 added files! Wow, it sounds like you had quite a lot missing besides the ICW help file! Fingers crossed for you

You know me DJ. ;>)
I have four machines running, two of which have 98SE on them. I also have the 98FE CD which I can extract files from.
Shirley, if you're still having problems, or if you still need some files, post again in this thread. If you know the name(s) of the files, post that information.
In the meantime try this. Go to Start, Run, type in msinfo32 and hit Enter. On the Menu Bar click on Tools, then Internet Explorer Repair Tool. Try the applicable options there. You may require the 98 CD.
Post back with your results.

Hi DJ. It's me again. I'm afraid the other suggestion did not work. I tried both adding components and repairing the internet connection wizard. Now what do I do? I also have an alert that a program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down; only it won't close so I moved it to the top of my screen. Sorry to be such a pain. It's easier to talk to you than it is to get my son on the phone or computer. I'm not complaining...just explaining. Hope you can help Shirley
I only put him there because he is my favorite annimated Christmas character.

Hi Shirley,
Let's just go back to the beginning for a moment. Why are you trying to install the help file for the Internet Connection Wizard (ICW) ? Are you trying to set up an Internet connection on your PC by running the ICW and it's coming up with an error? If so, what exactly does the error message say? If you have the name of the file that you need, I'm sure that Dan Penny can help you out

P.S. Post a new thread about the 'illegal operation' error and we'll deal with that separately - it gets too confusing dealing with two different problems in the same conversation

Hi DJ. I think I have found what I needed for my internet connection. I found "internet download manager". I downloaded it and now I can click on "internet connection". I still have not figured out the error message which is: this program has performed an illegal operation. I don't have to be doing anything for this to pop-up.
