AVG 7.1.408 not working and screwing up windows

Whenever I loaded avg 7.1.408 onto my dad's pc with 98 it says:

    error C:\WINDOWS\System\WSOCK32.dll was not found
    and then explorer crashes

why does it do this he has the same version on his other computer.

Sorry for the wait in response. I formatted and went to reload XP and found that my CD was scratched. Had to go out and buy another CD. In the meantime, I had been using my Win2K machine, and the email notification was on that machine. Just merged my two email files and saw this posting. (I hadn't look on the index for a while it seems....)

"why does it do this he has the same version on his other computer."

If he has the 98 CD he can attempt an "over the top" reinstall of the O/S on the problem machine. This means you DO NOT format, simply reinstall the O/S, ensuring the "new" install goes to the C:\WINDOWS folder, and NOT C:\WINDOWS000. You'll be informed of any files which are newer than the CD "stock" files, and choose to leave the newer files in place. This method leaves current settings/programs in place. However, any patches/updates etc would have to be reinstalled. See below.

The drawback to this is that 98 has gone EOL (End Of Life) or EOS (End Of Support). Updates are no longer being produced.

    and

I have earlier versions of AVG which may work. Post back with any further info.
