Can't Access The Net
I recently reinstalled Win 98 SE. Since the pc didn't "recognize" the old modem, I put it in the shop to have a new one installed. It's a PCI SoftV92 voice softening modem.
When I brought it home, I found I could not download my MSN completely. When it got to the dialing part, the pc either froze (requiring either manual turning off or unplugging it), OR shut off quickly OR showed a black colored screen with the mesage "Windows Protection Error. You should restart your pc."
The pc shop has nothing more to offer after the modem was installed.
When I tried to download in "Safe Mode" I got this message: "Your modem is not working properly or is already in use......etc.
When I checked under "Modem Properties/Resources" I got this message: "This device isn't using any resources because it's not currently enabled or has a problem".
I feel the problem is a simple one, but no one seems to know what it may be, and most people, including those at the pc shops don't want to bother with a dinosaur like Win 98 SE.
Needless to say, I would appreciate any assistance. Thank you in advance.

Hello, and Welcome to D-A-L.
"PCI SoftV92 voice softening modem" is actually a generic term/description.
Download, install, and run Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare) Once it's finished loading and running, look under Computer, Summary, Network, or under Windows Devices [ Modem / *********** ]. This will tell you what modem is installed. Post that information.
