    USB Problems

Every time since my dad installed that stupid f-secure suite from charter the usb is messed up.

When you unplug the usb to say the digital camera it locks up the computer. It says msgsrv32 not responding.

If you cancel this process by CTRL+ALT+DELETE then the computer resumes function just without USB function.

which so happens to be either the camera or the Cable modem.

what's going on what can I do?

Also I think he has the infamous 98 shutdown/restart problem how can I fix this?

When he goes to shutdown the computer it doesn' shut down and when he goes to restart the computer it says it's shutting down and doesn't restart.

I found some info on this problem and I downloaded the microsoft patch to fix it it didn't work. The thing is it worked fine before we installed charter high speed security suite(F-secure). I noticed when F-Secure configred itself it blocked universal plug and play.

But like I said before it worked before. Is there a way I can re-enable it or something or figure out where I can enable it or disable it.

This is a serious problem because there are only two usb ports on the computer and one is attached to the printer the other is attached to a USB extension cord which runs either the cable modem or the digital camera.

    Has F-Secure been un-installed?

Have you tried removing all USB elements in Device Manager, restarting, and invoking the New Hardware function (if it doesn't start by itself)?

yes I've tried all that my dad even unistalled the root hub which I didn't know about. I think it may have had something to do with the Kodak Camera software because when I tried to disable it from running on my machine (XP) it screwed it completely I lost the xp theme I had and my sound card.

is there a way I can find out what services are running in 98 like with xp when I type services.msc?

I know about msconfig that's where I disabled it (in 98) but I think it might have still been running.

Is there a way you can do a repair install in 98 like you can in XP? Because my dad's USB works but once you disconnect it and plug it back in it doesn't so I was thinking maybe a repair install will fix what's wrong. Any suggestions?

have you tried installing the drivers? if it is a pci card, you will probably have got a disk, if it is built into the motherboard, what is the make + model of it?

don't think there is a repair install for Win 98

well I had posted another topc that describes what happens but simply put My dad has 98 and he got a cable modem for high speed internet. He uses USB instead of Ethernet. He needed a firewall so we tried ZA but they only support XP now. Charter offers a security suite which is F-Secure so he installed that and he had AVG too and F-Secure wasn't installed properly because it wanted us to remove AVG and we didn't. So then we finally did remove AVG and reinstalled the Security Suite then it blocked all plug and play devices (USB) and we unistalled it after we found a ZA that works with 98 and now he can't use USB at all I mean he can but like I said if he unplugs it and then plugs something else in the computer freezes it says msgsvc32 not responding or something.

He needs the usb for the digital camera and the cable modem. He can still use the modem which is plugged into the USB but once he unplugs it for any reason he can't and pretty much just has to restart. He also has a camera which he can't use it's very frustrating.

yeah, sounds like a pain of a problem!!! i hate little annoying problems like that!

Anyway, i found errors with 'Msgsrv32' but not 'msgsvc32'

check your current firewall to see if that is blocking it

you could try re-installing ZA and enabling msgsvc32 and then un-installing

This is all that i can think of for now, mabe Dan will be able to help you further than this, he specialises in Win98
