    CPU usage 100%

My PC got infected with loads of spyware stuff & eventually died. I deleted the partition, reformatted & re-installed Windows 2000 SP4, before connecting to the web I installed the free ZoneAlarm firewall, got everything working - have installed all current windows updates and scanned with AdAware which found 13 nasties and deleted them, so, I think the PC should be all clean and working fine, however it seems to be really slow when doing anything ie opening my computer or control panel etc, and the CPU is running at 100% or just below constantly, any suggestions/ideas about what is going on and how to resolve would be much appreciated, thanks in advance for any help.

I would open the Task Manager to the Processes tab and try to see what Process is consuming the CPU.

i did look at that - albeit last night and from memory the only two with anything in the CPU column were svchost.exe & explorer.exe

explorer.exe is the basic Windows GUI (Graphic User Interface)

svchost.exe is a generic tag for random processes.

I would suspect the Zone Alarm. At least as a test I would disable it and see if it makes a difference.
