    Monitor Problems

Just inherited a Tiny Windows 98 PC from my father-in-law.
Was working fine at his house on an old CRT monitor.
Took it home and connected it to a brand new Benq TFT monitor but on boot up, got several bleeping sounds and no output signal to the monitor.
Tried it on another TFT monitor but that didn't work either.
Both are Windows 98 compatible monitors and I have the CD with the drivers on.

    So a few questions :
Would connecting a new monitor without the driver mean I wouldn't see anything ?
And what would the bleeping mean ?
Would I be able to connect an old CRT monitor, get the base unit working again, install the new monitor driver and then connect the new monitor ?
Or have I completely crashed the machine ?

Can't even boot into safe mode as tried that.

Any help or advice much appreciated !

    Hello, and Welcome to D-A-L.

Does this system have onboard video and a seperate video card in a PCI or AGP slot? If so, the bios may be set up to run from one or the other. This can be checked by switching the monitor cable to the "other" video connector.

The beeps may indicate a failed video card (or chip if onboard). What bios is on the machine? With the bios type the beep code interpretations can usually be found.

    Yes.

Or have I completely crashed the machine ?
    I doubt it.
