Hi,
New to this forum, hope you can help
A freind of mine is running Win2K and has recently received an upgrade from dial-up to broadband (AOL). This means she has a new modem, ethernet cable etc etc.
Anyway I tried setting it up for her but there seems to be a problem with the Ethernet connection on the computer. After some work I managed to work out that there was no driver for the Ethernet adaptor. Not sure why this is the case but it may have something to do with the fact that the computer was part of a company network at some point.
Anyway I downloaded the required driver from a website but when I try and install it the O/S just seems unable to see the file. I choose the search for file option and then navigate to the location of the file and in the look up window it even displays the name of the file it is looking for (something like b57*.inf) and I select the one that I have downloaded but then it just takes a few seconds and says that windows was unable to locate the file.
I suspect there may be more serious problems with the computer or maybe it is just the wrong driver. How can I tell which driver I need? I believe it depends on the Ethernet adaptor make/model? How can I check this? If I have already got the correct driver then why might Win2K be unable to see it? Are there any known problems in this area? I think the O/S has SP1 but I have noticed that a message pops up occassionally saying that the registry is corrupted! Bit worrying but not sure if miht be the problem.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
