    Error 2

Help? I just started using DSL on an old computer (4 years old) and have run into an odd situation. I had a bunch of old spyware on my computer that was slowing it down so I used the Lavasoft product to rid it. That didn't quite do it so I tryed a few others... needless to say after installing a few and then uninstalling them I started to get this message when I tryed another one and subsiquently anything that I try to install now:
"Unable to execute file in the temporary directory. Setup aborted."
"Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."
Have I picked up a virus of some kind? I tryed to load Symantic Antivirus after the fact, but that wouldn't load either.

Am I hosed, or is there anything that can be done?

I have rebooted, tried loading directly from the internet and a disk, but to no avail.

    Please, help....

What is the make and model of the computer?

What OS disks do you have? An OEM recovery or a Microsoft 2K CD?

A Repair or Clean install might be the most expedient answer.

    Otherwise:

As a first response you might want to post a HijackThis log for review by our Pros in that section:

Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.
    (Not in this section please).

I put the computer together myself, it is running an AMD 3200 with 1G ram. I nolonger have the 2000 Pro disk (lost in my last move). I tried to follow your instructions below, however, I can't install anything.... It appearse that I will either need to buy a new OS or find a disk that I can run registry cleaning software off. Does that even exist?

I already have AdAware SE on the comp. and it is finding the same stuff after every scan.

Appreciate any insite you could provide.

You could try deleting all your temporary .tmp files.

Also you could try booting into Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key after your BIOS POST but before Windows starts.

Here you could try to run HijackThis.
