modem installation problem
Hello, I've just bought a Sitecom modem pci card V.92 and installed it and the included drivers. However, although it is listed in device manager the com1,com2 and com3 ports are empty. I've checked that all disable hardware boxes are unchecked and restored default port settings.
How can I assign the modem to a com port? The computer is running 98SE
Thanks in advance.

Hello, and Welcome to DAL.
Control Panel, Modems, Add modem. The Comm port can be assigned there.

Hi Dan, thanks for the reply - The modem installed fine using add modem ( before it installed with plug and play ). I assigned it to Com port 1 ok but when i did a diagnose check it couldn't communicate with the device so i checked the IRQ number which was 4 and went into BIOS to look around. I found that in Power management setup the modem was assigned IRQ 5 so I changed it to 4
Feeling very confident that it was sorted I went back and did another check and unfortunately the screen went blank and a message came up:
An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C15c627B in VXD. This was called from 0028:C15C63AD in VXD. Followed shortly after by A fateful exception has occured at 0167:BFF83BFC. The current application will be terminated.
I removed the modem in hardware settings and tried to reinstall it again but again although it recognised it no connection could be made resulting in another crash.
Apologies if this has rambled on a bit but I really want to sort this out.
Thanks again.

Hmmm. That modem is listed for 98/98SE use, so that shouldn't be a problem.
The modem was listed in the bios Power Management section? (I hope you're not associating/confusing IRQ numbers with Comm Port numbers.) Most PnP modems will assign Comm 4 or Comm 5. These are "virtual" ports created by the drivers/software for the modem.
First change the IRQ back to what it was. Either;
1. Remove the modem (Device Manager) and start over using Control Panel, Modems, Add Modem. When you get the "HAVE DISK" box, point it to the floppy or CDROM that came with the modem.
2. In Device Manager, reinstall (or update) the drivers, again pointing the system to the modem floppy or CDROM.
3. If the modem software defaults to Comm 1, 2, or 3, the corresponding port should be disabled in the bios, thereby allowing the modem software to have control over it as opposed to the O/S controlling it.
