    Question CD Rom unplugs!!!

    HELP!!!

My CD Rom and DVD Rom automatically unplug themselves. All of a sudden the "Unplug Hardware" box comes up.

I have checked Task Scheduler to make sure it was not listed.

I'm not sure what to do now!!! I have to back up my pictures onto a CD, and I can't when my CD Rom unplugs itself!!!!!

    What do I do??

I have a Sony Vaio, not a new one.............. The computer came with Win ME, and I upgraded to Win 2000.

Are you talking about internal drives or USB external?

Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

    Does this happen continuously?

I have internal cd-rw and another dvd rom.

The problem started when I upgraded to Win2000 from Win ME. There is not a specific time that it unplugs. Just all of a sudden, I will get a window that pops up that says that I have unplugged the drive(s).

After that message, they do not show up in My Computer.

I have found that Sony requires me to update my BIOS before I install Win2000, but I did not. I have since, went back and updated the BIOS, but there was no update for the CD Rom and DVD Rom.

My computer did not come with any boot disks as well. I have 2 hard drives, and one of them is supposed to be used as a bootable disk drive. Unfortunately, I upgraded on that drive................

There is no way to get an original Win ME to try to start from scratch..... What do I do???

Your 2K upgrade CD is a boot disk: no?

I am wondering if after you updated the BIOS did you reinstall 2K?

    I would suggest that.

Otherwise do the drives reappear after a reboot?

Sometimes the drives reappear after a re-boot, but not all of the time.

Unfortunately, the BIOS update only had something for my graphics card, nothing else.

    Do you suggest I re-load win2000?

I'm not sure what you meant on the win2000 disk being a boot cd.

What I meant in my last post was I was told that my computer did not come with any boot disks, or back up program disks should I have a system failure. Those "disks" are on a seperate hard drive that would have been bootable had I not used it to upgrade to win2000. The way Sony says is to leave that hard drive alone, and use the other one to upgrade so that if I have a system failure, I would still be able to boot up from one of the hard drives and return the computer to factory settings.

But I upgraded on that drive. So basically, I have 2 hard drives. One of which should have been partitioned to keep winME, and a new partition to be created to hold win2000. But I did not do that. I did not partition the drive, I just put win2000 and lost everything of winME.

I'm not sure if it matters to have winME or not. I just assumed that because when I upgraded, that is when my cd & dvd rom started this. I do not want to go back down and load winME, that is a last resort.

I bought a new cd rom, but it did the same thing.

I thought it is the drivers, but I have done all of the updates possible. I am now at a loss as to what to do next.

    Yes.

My thinking was that you were supposed to upgrade your BIOS first. So now that the BIOS has been upgraded reinstall 2K.

You can start the computer (boot) with this CD? That was all I meant.

If your 2K CD is an Upgrade version you will need previous proof of a Windows OS (ME) and or may have to call Microsoft.
