Do you have a Hewlett Packard device installed on the system? (Printer, scanner, etc.) If so, and there are no other oleaut32.dll errors, uninstall it and then reinstall the software for it.

Yes I have an al in one HP. Took 6 hours with HP to install drivers. Still not right. Will try your suggestion. Thank you so much.Originally Posted by Dan Penny
You're welcome.
My room mate has an HP 300Mhz system I gave her, and she obtained a HP PSC 1210 (All in one printer, scanner, copier). It too gave me grief. The original Drivers/Software CD which came with it worked for about a week, then started causing hangs etc. I downloaded the updated driver package on my broadband as she only has dialup. 170 MB later...... Quite a package. They also have on the HP site a critical update (SP26273.EXE), which may or may not apply to your hardware.

Sounds familiar. I also get a script error that HP cannot repair (Filec:\Program FilesHP\DigitalImaging\bbfe\director\director3.htm ). They say it is my system. When I check that location I find a read only &archive attribute. Should I remove read only?Originally Posted by Dan Penny
Sure, can't hurt to remove the RO attrib. If I remember correctly, I had to remove everything and start over. (Physically disconnect the PSC (hers is USB) then remove the software.) I then reinstalled the software, and connected the printer when prompted during the install.
Thanks again.Originally Posted by Dan Penny
Found C:\io.sys as a READ ONLY. Shall I change it also. (Win98SE)
No.
Gratful for your expediency and knowldge you share.Originally Posted by Dan Penny
Sorry to be so short with my last post, I was loading 98SE on two different machines at the time.
IO.SYS is your main file on the DOS end of 98SE and earlier DOS versions. It's the InputOutput system file. It's this file and command.com that really run your system. MSDOS.SYS is basically a "pointer/load" file. It tells these other two where things are and how the O/S should load. These are your three primary files. IO.SYS should always be write protected (Read Only).
