    Explorer.exe Error

When I bring up Explorer using right click on the Start button, I get a message box displaying "Memory could not be read error" with full text as shown below:

    "
The instruction at 0x7cf53628 referenced memory at 0x06f1618c. The memory could not be read.

Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on CANCEL to debug the program.
    "

After I click on OK, my windows will freeze.
I then brink up Taks Manager by presseing ALT-CTRL-DEL keys and run explorer.exe by clicking on the New Task... button.

Also when I delete a file from explorer, I get a similar "memory could not be read" error message box (the memory location listed are slightly different than what I showed in above example). But the file does get deleted and the windows does not freeze at this time.

Similarly, in windows explorer if I right click on a file (in order to open it...), I get similar error.

As long as I don't involve right click mouse event, I can continue working without any problems (except for the file delete operation in explorer where I don't use the right click but just delete the file by clicking on the delete image represented by "x").

Please help or should you require more information, I will be happy to provide that information. I have a program called BeLarc Advisor (www.belarc.com) which prints out detailed profile of my computer and the softwares installed on it.

Helpful Information about operating system, and the laptop are as below:

    Operating System:
    Microsoft Windows 2000
    5.00.2195
    Service Pack 4

    Computer:
    Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop
    523,736 KB RAM

    Thanks so much in advance.

No, the suggestions in the target link did not resolve my issue.

    Thanks.

Did you try to repair IE? If so and it didn't work did you reinstall IE?

    Assuming you have IE6:

How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 6

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in
    Windows XP

(The article is written for XP but the registry information for
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components
    applies to Windows 2000 also.)
At the level of a "Memory could not be read error" IE and Windows Explorer are most likely working with shared files.

Also as many of these searches suggest malware I would suggest:

As a first response you might want to post a HijackThis log for review by our Pros in that section:
