I'm running explorer 6 , 128 bit.
I don't have Gmail installed as such - it's just like hotmail - web-based.
and I am not running Google talk (doesn't work on 98).

In internet options, advanced, inline auto complete (under browser) is checked.
So the reason is something different from this.
I have been looking around the Gmail site though and
have discovered the frequently contacted list can be
expanded, which makes using it without the autocomplete
a bit less problematic.

I have enabled some of the Active X functions and it seems
to be shutting down a bit less frequently. This may or not be
related though as it is temperamental...

If you have any other thoughts, please let me know.

Just for your info,
I have fixed the problem by reinstalling Internet explorer.
The mail addresses now come up when I type the first letter
and it is no longer shutting down.
Makes life much easier!
