    Question Network XP to 2000

    Can you help?
When sharing files on my home network when 2000 looks at my XP machine it is fine but when XP looks at my 2000 machine I am asked for a user name and password. Can I stop this request for a password perminertly?

    I find these two ideas:

First off, win2k and xp are the easiest to network. Very good OS's for that. Secondly, Win2k and XP are very picky when it comes to computers accessing eachother. When you log into your win2k box with say Usename: User and Password: Password. You need to add that same account to the XP machines as well, to gain access to it.
make sure both computers are set up as being in the same workgroup and try again. (in win2k, go start, settings, network and dial-up configurations and click the link for Network Identification)
or, just right click my computer and go properties (which will open up the system properties dialogue) and click the network id tab. should be similar in xp

    Thanks for the advice.
I can make the network connection work but I would like NOT to need to supply a username and password when XP looks at 2000.
You are not asked for username and password in the other direction i.e. 2000 to XP.

To require or disable a logon password in a workgroup setting

Open Users and Passwords in Control Panel.
On the Users tab, do one of the following:
Click the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer check box to require users to provide this information when they log on.
Clear the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer check box to allow a user to automatically log on. You will be prompted to provide the name and password of the user who will be automatically logged on each time the computer starts.

    Hi Jephree
Thanks for your reply but this was already how my 2000 machine was set up.
The problem is not logging on to 2000 but when I want to share a file over my network.
My XP machine can share with my son's XP laptop no problem and no username or password asked for but if I want to read a file on my 2000 machine over my network from any XP machine (my own or son's) I must supply a usename and password in a box on the XP machine. This is only required once or until the XP machine is restarted for any number of files to be opened.
I would like to be able to look at the 2000 from an XP machine without the need to supply the default 2000 username and password.
This works in reverse i.e. 2000 to XP no problem.
