    Are you getting error messages?

If so could you post them verbatim please.

    Otherwise what exactly is happening?

Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

Also, is the data part of the operating system (in which case you'll be getting error messages), or is it your own data you've lost?

If it's your own work, there's probably very little that can be done. We all lose things and then wish we'd made backups. I know. I've done it more times than I care to remember.

If you're getting error messages, meaning it's a system file that's corrupted, answer Jephree's question as fully as possible and ignore everything I say, for the present at least.

If it's your own work, the best way I've found of protecting important files is, perhaps surprisingly, to encrypt them. I've never yet lost an encrypted file, and now I use encryption to make backups of all my important stuff. Note. This won't recover files that are already corrupted.

You'll find a link to an extremely user-friendly - and FREE - encryption programme called "Cryptainer LE" on page 4 of my Website, called "Barney's Place" at

    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/lesgrotte/index.html

You can have any number of "vaults", which appear as "removable drives" when opened, but each one is limited to a maximum of 25MB in the free version. If you need more than that, you'll need to buy an upgrade, which is what I did when I found how useful it was, but 25MB is plenty big enough to find out whether it's for you.

Perhaps I should mention the fact that I have no connection whatsoever with Cypherix, who make Cryptainer, or with any of the other links you'll find on "Barney's Place".
