    Hello, and Welcome to DAL.

Download, install, and run Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare) Once it's finished loading and running, look under Computer, Summary, Multimedia, or, under Multimedia, PCI / PnP Audio. This will tell you what sound devices you have available on your system. Post that information.

Grab the attached AC97.zip file. Unzip the contents to your C: drive. It will create it's own directories on C:. (c:\sound\Wolfson\win98)

(NOTE: You will need your 98 CD so the appropriate files can be extracted from it.)

    1. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.

    2. Double click System.

    3. Click Device Manager.

    4. Double click PCI Multimedia Audio Device.

    5. Click Reinstall Driver.

    6. Click Next.

    7. Click Next.

    8. Click Specify a location, then point it/navigate to the c:\sound\Wolfson\win98 directory. Now press ENTER.

    9. Click Next.

    10. Click Next.

    11. Put the Windows 98 CD disc into the CD-ROM drive, then click OK.

    12. When the files have been copied, click Finish.

    13. Click Close.

    14. Restart Windows 98 and for changes to take effect.

    Post back with your results.

First make sure the sound device is enabled in your bios. (Post back if you have trouble getting into the bios, or navigating through the various screens. Be sure to include your bios type/make/brand if you need help on this. It may be AWARD, AMI, Phoenix, IBM, etc. It's pretty well the first information you see when turning on your system.)

Once this sound device enabled is affirmed, navigate to the c:\sound\Wolfson\win98 directory and right click on the Ichaudio.inf file and select INSTALL. (You may have to reboot for the entries to be added to the registry so it shows up in Device manager.) Then go through the metric I outlined above. The drivers should then update.

    Post back with your results.

"Then go through the metric I outlined above. The drivers should then update."

You went through Control Panel and did the update drivers exercise?

Did it ask you to insert the 98 CD, and did it copy files from it?

If everything is listed properly in Device Manager, and there are no yellow exclamation marks highlighting a problem with the drivers, then it appears to be a physical/hardware (connection) problem.

Are you sure your speaker system is working and connected to the system properly?

If they are "powered" speakers, are you sure they are working? (Sometimes the little transformer which powers them burns out.) Can you test the speaker system on another system?
