I have split your thread from the one you posted to. It's considered impolite to "hijack" someone elses thread.
Icons are usually assigned by the program which actions the file in question. In your case, MP3's.
What program did you use to play MP3's? Windows Media Player 7.x or above? WinAmp?

No worries. I contribute to a number of help forums and they're all the same. Inserting a new question into someone else's post may (on some sites) see your post deleted. Not here though. We (the Moderators) just straighten it out and inform. Now, on with the show....
I also use mplayer2.exe for mp3's in 98SE. However, the "default" icon is a blue video camera in front of a sheet of paper. On my XP - Home system, using the same program (Windows Media Player - Ver. 6.4.09.1130.) I get a blue speaker in front of a sheet of paper. (I copied 6.4 over to XP as I won't use any version of WMP above 6.4. Versions 7.x and above is a memory hog, takes over everything, and the licensing factors come into play.)
When you click on a mp3 file and it plays, click on the HELP, then About Windows Media Player. What version does it display?
98 came with versions 6.2 and 6.4. (6.2 = mplayer.exe & 6.4 = mplayer2.exe.)
Could you have been using mplayer.exe (the older version included in 98) as opposed to mplayer2.exe? Maybe this is where you got the green speaker icon.
Also if you started using some new software that has associations for mp3's, it could have replaced the icon.
Hold down the SHIFT key and right click on any mp3 file. Choose OPEN WITH and then browse to mplayer or mplayer2. (This step is just to ensure the file association is correct.) By doing this for both WMP versions, you may find your elusive green speaker.
Post back with your results. I can point you to a program that will find all the icons on your system and save them to a folder, so if this ever happens again, you can change the default icon to whatever icons you've saved. You may find this icon you seek somewhere on your system.

The version of Media Player 2 is:
6.4.07.1112
I tried associating with Media Player and Media Player 2 but I still get the box with an opened lid which seems to have the number 21 inside it.
The little green speaker that I mention is a speaker like the one in Control Panel/Settings/Sounds but it is in front of a Notepad.
The blue video camera is associated with Soundblaster, I think.
Yes - the new programme that interfered and caused this minor irritation (!) was Nero with Power DVD - which wanted to use its own player. It was in trying to get back to Windows Media Player that I found the little green speaker was gone.
I still have the little yellow speaker in front of a notepad for wav files. I suspect that they are some kind of windows default icons but as I say, I googled until I was dizzy trying to find a solution.
In the scheme of things, this is really so unimportant, but I do appreciate that you have taken the time to reply to me.
I would appreciate the link that you mention.

Thank you very much for your help Dan. I have downloaded the programme.
My thanks.

You're welcome.
This was helpful. I didn't like using the WMP7 icon for every type of media file.
I found the old coloured speaker and coloured camera icons in QUARTZ.DLL of SYSTEM folder in ME. (for anyone else out there running ME....)
