Explorer caused Invalid Page fault in module Explorer.exe at 0167. 00401F31

    Running window 98

This morning the pc started to boot, but this time it was different... it
    asked for a User name

After that, it then even asked for the product key.... which I certainly
    never expected...

upon rebooting, it reaches the stage where an error message appears stating
that "Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module Explorer.exe at 0167.
    00401F31"
As well as some data regarding Registers...

    EAX: 00000000 cs: 0167 EIP: 00401F31
    EFLGS: 000110246
    EBX: 00000001 ss: 0167 esp: 0080FEF4
    EBP: 0080FEF4
    ECX: C8F97870 ds: 016F
    ES: 00000000
    FS: 1A37
From that point there, the boot process becomes totally dormant....

    I tried http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293174
at step 7 there is no internet explorer but there is an E2give Plug-in which cannot be
uninstalled.....I also found out that it is a spyware.
    I also tried http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;191609
but it did not work and I also tried
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;296211
but it won't start from the dvd rom and/or the floppy

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

"... the boot process becomes totally dormant...."

Does this mean the system stops/hangs? Or does it mean it just goes to a C:\> command prompt?

If the system won't boot at all, boot with an 98 EBD. (Emergency Boot Disk) If you don't have one, grab this one. (* See below) Boot without CDROM support.

At the A:\> prompt, type in c:\windows\command\scanreg/restore and hit Enter. Pick a date which is prior to the problem occurance.

If the system boots to the C:\> prompt, just type in windows\command\scanreg/restore and hit Enter. Pick a date which is prior to the problem occurance.

    Post back with the results.

The above bootdisk image file is a self extracting file and has to be executed (run) from a running Windows machine in order to create the actual startup diskette. (This image file produces the same bootdisk which 98SE creates.) This downloaded image file will format the floppy disk, write the files to the disk, then verify the file write, so it'll take a minute or three to create the bootdisk.

Ensure the floppy drive is set as the first boot device in the bios. http://www.d-a-l.com/articles/library/23.html

When you boot a machine with this boot floppy, it creates a RAMDRIVE in system memory to contain DOS system tools.

If you're booting with CDROM support, it will move your "normal" CDROM device/drive letter "up" one level. (If your CDROM is normally E:, it will be F: when booting with this bootdisk.)
