    About Hard disk Partitions

    I have purchased a new hard disk.
    At First step, i installed win98 in C: drive (40B) without making any partition.

    After that, i was in need of making partitions in hard disk. Then, I ran fdisk. I deleted win98 from C: drive and started making partitions. But it made only 2 (C: and D. I wanted more so I had to format those partitions and applied the same procedure again (fdisk).

    This time, it showed me predetermined size of a particular partition. I couldn't exceed it. Why did it ask me so??

    Also, I want to ask whether I can continue without making partitions in my hard disk?? Is there any risk or harm in doing that??

    Also tell me, do we have to make Physical Partitions first or Logical Partitions??

    You cannot load anything onto a hard disk until it is set up to receive data, this means partitioning and formatting. All O/S's (Operating System's) provide tools for doing this. There are also tools provided by the hard disk manufacturer for doing this.

    PRIMARY partitions are created first. The size depends on your choices of what you want to do with the disk space. You can use the entire disk or just a portion of it. If you use just a portion, leaving unused disk space, an EXTENDED partion is created (using ALL the leftover space), and then LOGICAL partitions are created within the EXTENDED partition.

    If you are using fdisk, and your hard disk is over 64GB total size, you will need the updated fdsik available from Microsoft; http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...263044usa8.exe

    Here are two links for detailed explanations of the fdisk tool;
