Missing CDROM in Windows...
It's a mystery to me.. So here's what happened... I have Windows 2000 running on my 30GB HDD.. Everything works great.. CD Rom works fine and shows up in 'My Computer'. I installed a new Seagate 160GB HDD and used the software that came with it to transfer all the data... to replace the boot drive with the new. All goes well.. remove the old drive and install the new.. boots up.. while going through the post at the beginning, the drive it there.. Boots into windows just like before.. everything looks good.. but go into 'My Computer' and there is no CDROM drive.
If I hook up the old drive it's there... but not there with the new drive...?????? Just for grins I upgraded to XP and the drive was there... but ended up not going with XP due to some driver problems with a firewire card.. so I'm back to Win2000.. (reformatted and recopied) with the same problem.. no cdrom.... No question the CD ROM works.. I tried another from a different computer.. and still nothing.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..! Thanks in advance,

Was the Seagate software on a floppy or CD?
When you cloned the drive were both old and new on the same channel or different channels? (Primary/Secondary)
Under the Device Manager do you see IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers?
Any yellow exclamation points if you expand that tab?

The software was on CD.. It copied itself to the harddrive.. then ran off the hard drive. The drive doesn't show up at all in device manager, both controllers did.. both hard drives did.. And yes, both drives were on the primary cable..

Just to verify: The Secondary channel reports that it is operating correctly in the Device Manager?
It is strange to think that the clone went well with the exception of the CD drive but in general it is advised to clone drives on separate channels.
From Primary Master to Secondary Master. I don't know if it is worth it to you to check that out with another clone or not. Drivers should not be an issue.
Another test would be to put the old hard drive on Secondary Master (replace the CD-ROM) just to see if it is detected.

I'll give it a try.. Thanks..
