Re: C prompt what now ?

The date on the 98 cd is 5/11/98

That's a directory list of C:\. Remember to change to the Win98 directory before issuing the dirlist command.

If you are at C:\>, type in cd win98. Your prompt should now reflect; C:\Win98>, then do the dirlist to text file as I outlined above.

OK. You've got all the setup files.

Download and extract the diag.exe file to a floppy. (From the below attached Diag.zip) Boot the troubled machine. (If I remember things correctly, you'll be in DOS at C:\>). Insert the floppy with diag.exe into the drive and type in a:\diag. The Product Key for your existing windows installation will be displayed along with other information about your system. WRITE DOWN the Product Key.

When you have that, type in (at C:\>) win98\setup and hit enter. Windows setup should start. If it asks for the product key, you'll have it.

ALSO, watch for the installation directory. If it comes up as C:\WINDOWS.000, CHANGE it back to C:\WINDOWS.

    Post back with your results.

I dont know if I extracted the zip files properly. I hit f8 and chose command prompt only, ( the machine has been starting windows with errors. ). I put the floppy in the drive, typed in a:\diag , " bad command or file name" appeared.

Here is a direct link to the diag.exe file. (I forgot I've had it on my webspace for quite a while now.)

Just click on it and it should download. Save it to a floppy.

Also, if you get the same "error", try typing in the full file name; a:\diag.exe. (The "short form" works fine on my machine(s), but some computers are funny sometimes....)

O.K., everything went well, retreived product key, got into setup. After all that, it started up with a Dll file error ( XMLTOK.DLL missing ).

So windows starts after this error is displayed?

This file is not part of windows. It's added by a program and in certain circles http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=XMLTOK.DLL&meta= it's regarded as spyware:

    http://www.auditmypc.com/process/xmltok.asp says it is spyware

http://www.liutilities.com/products/...ibrary/xmltok/ says it is not spyware

    http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dl...s.shtml?xmltok free download

    http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-.../download.html free download

According to the post (#5) by robi here; http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/t1038893009 it's a part of Yahoo messenger and some other program; "I found it in two of my directories (c:\program files\yahoo!\messenger AND c:\program files\2wire)."

Post #7 says it goes in the c:\windows\system directory.

So you have two choices, find the entry in either system.ini or the registry and remove it (to get rid of the error), or download it.

Let me know what the system is doing, and what you plan to do about the dll file.

    O.K.,
The computer starts up windows, immeadiately the error message pops up, messenger is started at the same time. I do not need messenger, my kids used to use that, and this machine is now a spare.
So maybe I will delete messenger. The computer still takes a long time to do anything. I now need to decide what to do. I am ready to delete the file, I have the file on a floppy, when I try to run it, I am asked what program to open it with. I do not know what to open it with.

If the messenger is not required any longer, check in Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs to see if it's listed. If it is, remove the program. This will (hopefully, it's supposed to) remove all associated entries in the registry and/or system.ini. This should eliminate the startup error for that dll file.

If it's not listed in Add/Remove Programs, check in the Start, Programs listing to see if it's listed among those programs. If so, see if there is an "Uninstall" option grouped with the listings for the program, and use it if available.

If neither of the above prove effective, you can attempt to find the reference(s) to this in the registry and remove them. I can walk you through this if it's the only recourse. By performing the "over the top" re-install, your existing registry was scanned, and appropriate entries entered the "new" registry.

"I now need to decide what to do. I am ready to delete the file, I have the file on a floppy, when I try to run it, I am asked what program to open it with. I do not know what to open it with."

Is this in reference to the XMLTOK.DLL file? If so, and you're getting rid of the initiating program, you no longer need it.
