    Outstanding. I've downloaded the zip files and will investigate. I'll be back.

    I expected as much with the msdos file replace. We have further work ahead, but at least that file is now OK.

    The contents of the first run log file (FRUNLOG.TXT), indicate this machine may be a proprietary machine. (ie; Brand Name - Dell, Gateway, IBM, Compaq, Hewlett Packard, etc). Do you know? It was originally set up (O/S loaded) on July 30, 2001.

    I'm working about three or four posts simultaneously (on this forum/site) and have forgotton about the c:\win98 contents. If this is indeed a windows setup directory containing the files needed to install windows, (and they haven't been damaged by scandisk or other "program" fixes etc), we can probably just perform an "over the top" re-install. This should leave installed programs, settings, drivers, etc intact and get windows going again.

    With a blank formatted floppy in the A:\ drive, from C:\>, change to the 98 directory (cd win98) and type in dir/a/o> a:\98list.txt. Post the directory file contents.

    I still need;
    copy/v c:\config.* a:\
    copy/v c:\autoexec.* a:\

    I believe config.sys simply contains;
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE

    and autoexec.bat probably contains;
    SET BLASTER=A220 17 D1 H7 P330 T6
    SET SBPCI=C:\SBPCI

    If you verify that the above is true, don't bother posting these, just affirm if I'm correct on this.

    As a last resort we could always also reinstate the machine to it's first loaded state by utilizing the SYSTEM 1ST file. This would mean any programs installed since that first date would have to be reinstalled, as well as other logistics - left over files, lots of things becoming useless garbage occupying hard disk space, dead registry entries, etc. An over the top reinstalled is far more desirable.

    Based upon the March 11, 2006 scandisk log file, you may as well delete FILE0001 CHK to gain 33 MB of space. (del file0001.chk) These files are useless for anything other than (sometimes possible) information as to what scandisk couldn't fix:

    *******************

    Microsoft ScanDisk for Windows

    NOTE: If you use an MS-DOS program to view this file, some of the characters
    may appear incorrectly. Use a Windows program such as Notepad instead.

    Log file generated at 21:53 on 3/11/2006.

    ScanDisk used the following options:
    Thorough test
    Automatically fix errors

    Drive Master (C contained the following errors:
    Restarted 10 times because another program wrote to this disk.

    ScanDisk was canceled.

    I did not get an email from DAL, so I was waiting for a response, sorry for my absence. I found a windows 98 cd at a garage sale, would this help ? It does not say FE or SE. This machine was originally a Gateway, prior to 2000, motherboard was replaced, I dont know for sure what all my 'computer guy" did to it. I got it back from him around 2001. Tdog

    Does the 98 CD you've obtained have a Product Key on the case/envelope?

    ie;
    XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

    OR,

    XXXXX-OEM-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-

    The computer booted up to windows with an error message "XMLTOK.DLL not found". What a surprise, I did not do anything different. I was going to try to your last suggestion, but the machine booted up instead.

    Please post the contents of the c:\Win98 directory (from my #24 post);

    With a blank formatted floppy in the A:\ drive, from C:\>, change to the 98 directory (cd win98) and type in dir/a/o> a:\98list.txt. Post the directory file contents.

    The CD you've obtained isn't necessarily useless.

    From your #13: "I am booting from a floppy that I downloaded from a site that you recommended to another user, it is 98SE."

    Boot with this bootdisk choosing CDROM support. Watch for the CDROM drive letter assigned to the drive near the end of the boot process.

    Put the 98 CD in the drive and from the A:\> prompt, type in dir/a/o x: (where x is your assigned drive letter.)

    If the dates on the files are 4/23/1999 then it's a 98SE CD, and can be used for file retrieval/rebuilding if we can't use c:\Win98.
