Because I bought an iPod and needed to install iTunes, my system prompted me that I needed to download and install SP4 for Windiws 2000. I did and installed it, then I installed iTunes (from the CD rom). When I wanted to fill my iPod with music from CDs, I noticed that both my CD Rom drives were no longer recognised because of error code 31, drivers missing. I have downloaded new drivers from manufacturer's websites, this didn't work, uninstalled both drivers and during reboot ran the wizard for 'finding new hardware', asked the device manager's diagnosis system to solve the problem, all with no effect. I have uninstalled iTunes, thinking the problem started after I installed this programme.
I have also noticed in the meantime that my drivers for my scanner, digital camera and printer are also not working anymore.
I don't know what to do, am quite nervous about opening the computer box and fiddle with the jumpers.
Has anybody some advice?
Thanks in advance.
When you installed SP4 did you turn off your Anti-Virus?
You might try uninstalling SP4 via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
What drivers did you try? What is the make and model of the CD drive?

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

Windows cannot load the driver. Try updating the driver for this device. On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.
I don't think I turned off my Norton Systemworks anti-virus.
I am not sure if I can uninstall, as I think when I downloaded the SP4, it recommended I make a backup, which I didn't do as I thought I was a bit low on memory....
I tried the drivers as specified above (ATAPI, which was the one built into the system when I bought it, Read only) and the LG RW which a friend built in for me a couple of years later.
Thanks

Do you see SP4 listed under > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs?
If there is a box at the top which says "Show Updates" click it.
If you can uninstall it you should and then reboot and reinstall it without your Anti-Virus running.
You will still need to find the drivers for devices not working. We would need to track down those specific CD drive manufacturers sites plus if your USB ports are not working you probably need the latest VIA chipset drivers.
Unfortunately, there is no option to uninstall Service Pack 4.
