Networking with Win 2000 and Win XP

When I open up the network icon I can see the icon for the computer which I want to access but when I try to access I am told that perhaps I dont have permission from the administrator. The computer which I wish to access is an IBM Think-pad running WIN 2000 and the main computer is a desktop running Win XP. Is there anyone out there who could help me, please?

So you get the error on the XP? Is it Home or Pro? Are you logged on as Administrator?

Thank you Jephree for your prompt reply. Yes, I get the error on the XP computer. How do I know whether or not I am loggged on as Administrator? When I switch on the computer I don't have to indicate whether or not I am the administrator. I have the feeling that I am close to being able to see the contents of the folder which I want to access but there is just some little thing preventing my doing that. Do you have any suggestions? Seamus.

I have XP Professional. Please forgive my slowness to respond. I am not familiar with this wonderful website.

    Go to:

    start/run

    And type:

    control userpasswords2

This will show all of your accounts and their designation e.g. Administrator: Limited; Guest; ASPNET; etc.

Can you determine from this if you are logged on as an Administrator?

When I did what you suggested I find that there are three USER NAMES given. They are Administrator, Guest, and Seamus. The first one is designated as ADMINISTRATORS, the second as GUEST and the third (Seamus) as ADMINISTRATORS. Does that mean that I the computer sees me as an Administrator?

The first is the so called built-in Administrator account. This account is usually not accessed and therefore remains as a default pure account.

Your Seamus Account was setup as an Administrator and should be able to do whatever you want on this computer.

Going back to your initial question can you post the exact error message verbatim.

I am not certain if this will pertain to your issue but it is a good page to have Re: XP privileges:

Thanki you again Jephree. The computer(s) on which I am working are in Japanese. So the error message I will have to translate. It says, "(Access to "Concepta" (the name of the file) in "Ibm-Thinkpad" (the name of the laptop computer which I want to access) cannot be accessed. It is possible that permission has not been granted to use this network resource. Check to see if the administrator has given permission. Access has been denied. )".
I shall now have a look at that website you sent me.
    Seamus.
