    Sorry for the delayed response

Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

Did you try uninstalling the Secondary IDE Channel from the Device Manager?

    Rebooting will reinstall.

yes this is a new problem and not un installed anything in device manager, all that was in there was the c: drive and the floppy drive

"update".... still cant get system restore to complete... there is loads of dates to choose from but when rebooting after doing system restore there is a message stating that the restore could not be completed , please try another date... tried most of them and given up... completed a scan disc ( which took about 24 hours and was told there was no problem ) .

i have found if i disconnect my cd rom drive, my cd-rw drive will show in my computer and operate ( strange... it registers as a cd drive... not a cd-rw drive?).

could it be a problem with my memory that is causing the loss of the drives? as i only have 192mb of sd ram.

do you think its maybe the right time to use my recovery disc as i have one running?.

What I was originally thinking was a problem with the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in Device Manager.

If you expand (+) this you will see your Primary and Secondary channels.

The Secondary is the channel for your DVD/CD drives generally. Since both were not detected I thought the problem might have been with the Secondary channel itself.

But since you can get one to work at a time I guess the channel is OK. Will both drives show when installed one at a time?

I doubt that your RAM is an issue here. Also Windows quite often refers to CD-RW as ROM.

If your system restore points do not work it is best to reset system restore by turning it off then back on. This will clean the calendar but should also restart the functionality for the future.

Why a scan disc would take that long is very strange

Just as another check you might run a HijackThis log by our Pros over in that section:

Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.
