HELP - Blue Screen of Death 0028:FF060DC3 in VXD viauido (03)

About 2 days ago I upgraded from "Anytime" to Broadband with Wanadoo. I'd had no problems with my PC before, once installed I encountered all sorts of problems, I'd couldn't open attachments or links contained in emails and my computer was running verly slowly. I ran Wizard and fixed the internet problems but I still kept encountering BSOB. Technical support blamed my Anti Virus provider AVG plus Firewall who in turn blamed my internet provider and suggested that my PC had been corrupted by the installation Disc.

I then purchased a repair package from a company off the Internet and their scan of my system kept revealing faults in "File Tyes" but failed to fix them. The result of the Fix it option showed all of the faults as rectifed but when I immediately ran another scan, the same number of faults were still there.

After spending several minutes on the Internet BSOB appears with the following message:-

WINDOWS - Fatal exception 0E occurred at 0028:FF060DC3 in VXD viaudio (03).

On the last occasion that BSOB occurred (03) had the following numbers after it: + 00002943. Following that message imy PC just wouldn't start and I ended up unplugging everything which seemed to do the trick.

I would have taken my PC to an engineer but I'm housebound at the moment suffering from the Shingles - can anyone help?

Is there anyone out there who can help?

Thought I'd fixed the problem (obviously not as clever as I thought I was) then it happened again this time showing error message, fatal exception etc etc 0E 0028:FF060E0F VXD viaudio (03) + 0000298F. It only happens when I'm on the internet. Please Please can somebody help me!

Regards

I am not too familiar with '98 but I will do some searching and will ask others to help here.

Sorry for the delay and will get back to you asap.

I will merge your threads for clarity.

Thank you Thank you so much! Being housebound has given me time to search myself but I don't know whether I'm making my PC better or worse. I knew VXD was sound and I followed steps in one of Dan Penny's responses to a problem posted in a Forum (can't remember where) and downloaded something and was feeling quite proud of myself until it crashed again, but with a different error message. I've looked in Microsoft Knowledge base but can't find any reference to the error message there. I've tried to run Disk Defragmenter, don't know how long it's supposed to take but after several hours it was still on 1% so I stopped it.

Download PW3041.ZIP driver package from Cirrus Logic from link in Dan Penny reply to Thread "Sound Card Problems again" posted 25th November 2005 by JMW.

My PC is a Daewoo 40X Max? (Yes I know it's old!)

Hello katy, and Welcome to DAL.

Are you running 98 First Edition or 98 Second Edition?

Has Symantec (Norton) AV ever been installed on this machine?

Are you comfortable working in the system registry?

"... I knew VXD was sound and I followed steps in one of Dan Penny's responses to a problem posted in a Forum (can't remember where) and downloaded something ..."

Do you remember if it was this site? (DAL)
(I contribute help to a few sites.)

What did you download?

What did it do? (Or supposed to have done?)

"I then purchased a repair package from a company off the Internet and their scan of my system kept revealing faults in "File Tyes" but failed to fix them. File Types?

There are many of these programs on the net. More often than not they are just a "scam" type thing. Similar to programs that promise to "expand or free or enhance" your memory. But, this is a different issue.........

Hi Dan

Thank you for posting your reply, your assistance is very much appreciated.

I'm sorry for the delay in responding, I have been struggling with my PC since yesterday evening and throughout today. I'll list what has been happening at the end of this message, in the meantime herewith my answers to your questions

ARE YOU RUNNING 98 FIRST OR 98 SECOND EDITION

I always assumed that I was in 2nd Edition but I'm unsure how to determine this. I know I need to go to C:\Command but I'm not quite sure what to do once I get there; perhaps you could let me know.

Has Symantec (Norton) AV ever been installed on this machine?

My PC is 2nd hand. I purchased it about 5 years ago from an established Company who refurbish them so I can not provide a definite answer to this question. Am I correct in assuming that you meant "Norton Anti Virus" I've not heard of Symantec. I had a Virus package from McAffee, but I had to change that to AVG Anti Virus, a Technician downloaded and installed the free version for me onto my PC. I upgraded to AVG Anti Virus Plus Firewall at the same time I went onto Broadband. The only other package that has been on is "Zone Alarm" this was also a free version that the Technician installed for me. This was removed prior to installation of the new AVG package.

Are you comfortable working in the system registry?

Well at this precise moment in time I'm sat comfortably in front of my PC avidly awaiting your response, however, I have absolutely no idea what "System Registry" is!! At the end of the day, If I press the wrong key it's my responsibility! I'm a fairly practical person and able to follow instructions, the question is how long have you got?

Please see my Thread 16th March 2006 1.04 am. The Thread in which your reply was contained was headed "Sound Card Problems again" and it was posted on the 25th November 2005 by JMW

What did you download?

PW3041.AIP driver package from Cirrus Logic www.cirrus.com

What did it do? (Or supposed to have done?)

Well I'm not that technical Dan so I don't really know whether PW3041.ZIP Driver Package did what it was supposed to have done; I just downloaded and installed it because I assumed that my error message was a problem similar to that which JMW was experiencing.

Since installing the Driver Package I can tell you that I've now got a volume control icon, I have to say that I didn't really notice it was missing until I discovered that my speakers weren't working. Incidentally, there is nothing wrong with my speakers but there is no sound coming out of them. CD will play but no sound.

I honestly thought I'd fixed the problem because I didn't get the BSoB with the message WINDOWS:- Fatal exception 0E occurred at 0028:FF060DC3 in VxD viaudio (03) or 0E 0028:FF060DC3 in VxD viaudio (0) +00002943. (See my 1st Thread) However, whilst working on the internet it went BSoD'D again, this time the error message read 0028:FF060EOF in VxD viaudio (03) + 0000298F.

crashing again, can you email me through my private address?

When it starts to whooring away, it usually results in it crashing but it hasn't done so, I'll carry on with the rest of my reply:-

"I then purchased a repair package from a company off the Internet and their scan of my system kept revealing faults in "File Tyes" but failed to fix them. The result of the Fix it option showed all of the faults as rectifed but when I immediately ran another scan, the same number of faults were still there."

File Types?

If you are asking me what the "File Types" errors revealed, I haven't got a clue! There was 121 of them, regardless of whether you scanned and repaired before it crashed they were still there. They were still there when I ran a scan immediately after I had run a scan and then repaired them. I did print off a report of the problem but it was gobble gook to me so I used it to light my fire!

There are many of these programs on the net. More often than not they are just a "scam" type thing. Similar to programs that promise to "expand or free or enhance" your memory. But, this is a different issue.........

Yep I can safely say that Free Registry Fix It 3.9 unlimited Fixes has been no use whatsoever. Their Technical live chat carried on until dawn but they were not able to fix the problem, I have requested a refund (they did guarantee this) I will let you know the outcome.

Members and Guests of this Forum reading this and experiencing problems with their PC should pay heed to this. When you are desparate you will try anything and that is what I did. I desparately needed to access my emails and pay bills and being unable to leave the house or get a Technician to come out to my PC, I purchased the upgrade.

I've also run a number of other Free Programmes but I haven't bought the upgrades when prompted that my faults exceeded the level of their free fix it ones. Interestingly, the results of each Programme Scan differed; faults were identified that weren't in existence on others whilst faults reported as fixed were shown as faulty. For me it was a complete waste of time and money; maybe my PC was already damaged beyond repair before I purchased the programme.

I'll now use numbers to discuss other things that have happened to my PC since your reply to my Thread:-

1. Since your reply to my Thread and within the last 24 hours my PC must have crashed on at least several occasions with BSoB always showing the message WINDOWS Fatal Exception 0E 000028:FF060EOF in VxD viaudio (03) +0000298F. Pressing anykey will after a while and a lot of whooring followed by intermitant d,d,d,d,d,d from my Tower eventually let me shut down some but not all of the programmes that are running. If anything it usually jams on the internet. I then have to ctrl+alt+del message "Programme not Responding may be busy or wating for a response from you" press "wait" nothing. "End Task" sometimes it will let me return to windows sometimes it doesn't and I have to press reset on the Tower. Scandisk always runs on restart and checks C:\ for errors. It has never provided a message that there is or has been an error on C:\

2. When I managed to get the PC running again, the Welcome sign and register box for Windows came up requesting that I register (but I'm already registered) So I thought Ok, I'll do what it's asking me to do and register. Went through Registration process, got to submission page to connect to Microsoft, submitted registration, response message "No connection to internet. can't find dial tone" Both Green lights are lit up on the Broadband box no reason why it shouldn't connect automatically. Shut down registration, ran Internet Repair Wizard - BSoB.

3. Upon reload, shock horror can't work keyboard but the mouse worked. Solution, run Free Registry Fix it, after all that's what it's there for and I couldn't do anything else. Scan repair 121 errors revealed in "File Types" other things as well 127 altogether but no errors shown on either the Internet or Driver. Scan again faults still showing, how can that be it has just told me that it has repaired them.

4. Whilst working on the Internet the tower is whooring away and every now and again gives short beeps da da da da da. Stops then da da da da again, then BSoB.

5. I've persistantly run the Fix It Programme but as previously stated, regardless of whether I run it immedately after I've done a Scan and Repair, it still shows the same amount of errors. As stated I've run other programmes but to no avail. On the last occasion that I ran Free Registry Fix It 3.9 the Tower hissed and beeped at me. Then that was it no power whatsoever and the Tower wouldn't light up when you pressed either the on or reset button.

6. Because of the hissing I wondered whether the problem was due to a faulty power lead. So I unplugged and plugged everthing on a number of occasions and tried to restart it but nothing. Then I held the power switch in on the PC and the green light finally lit up but it didn't load. I pressed restart but nothing. Unplugged and plugged everything again then it finally it lit up and loaded. (With regard to whether one of the power leads from the Pc to my electrical mains is faulty, living out in the Country so to speak I have a trip box installed to my electrical power supply. Any shorts or faulty electrical equipment, the power in my cottage goes off and I have to reset the electrics, that hasn't happened)

7. Opened Internet Explorer after several minutes BSoB again. Usual scenario, press any key to continue then I try and shut down. Message comes up "Programme not responding" provides options press "wait" nothing happened press "End task" then it froze on the screen saving for "Windows is Shutting Down" Wouldn't let me turn the power off or reset. Unplugged at the mains again.

8. Restarted but this time whilst the Keyboard worked the monitor was dead. Unplugged and Plugged (not while PC running) Stroked, patted and physically shook it but nothing. Eventually, I manage to get everything back and running again but I suffered a number of crashes whilst working in the internet. I've concluded that the more I ask it to do whilst working on the internet, searching or opening results pages, the more objectional it becomes. Everything works fine on word and I've not had a crash whilst I've been using Outlook. The Tower is quiet at the moment, but I'm expecting BSoB again as soon as I hit the submit button to send this thread.

9. PC is old but has been reliable. No problems with it whatsoever until I installed Broadband. Was it me, did I do something wrong or was the installation software for Broadband faulty thus causing the drive components or whatever you call them to corrupt.

Hi again

Just BSoB'd again. No problems restarting this time. However when I tried to connect to the Internet, message "Can't find Server" ran Wizard for Internet Explorer restarted no problems and here I am again. This PC is amazing! Just to confirm I'm on Windows 98 2nd Edition.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Regards
Katy
