I know just enough to be dangerous. HELP!
Hey,
I am new to this forum. Here is my situation. I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows 98. (dell, 500 meg Pentium III, 128 ram, 20 gig hd)
I also bought a new cd burner and a new modem.
Here are my many problems.
1. The burner is recognized by the computer, but when I try to run the installation disk for the modem I get the following error message:
"setup.exe file is linked to missing export oleaut32.dll:173."
(The disk works fine in my XP machine.)
2. When I try to install the burning software, the wizard will start, but then shutdown with the following error code.
"file comct132.dll"
3. The sound card and the network card are not recognized.
I am sure there are multiple driver issues involved here. I downloaded the driver for the modem to a floppy disk, but the computer will not recognize it on the floppy.
Any help you can offer on any or all of the problems would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello, and Welcome to DAL.
"I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows 98."
Did you use a DELL 98 (Restore?) CD, or a retail Microsoft CD?
"... when I try to run the installation disk for the modem I get the following error message:
"setup.exe file is linked to missing export oleaut32.dll:173.""
The version of oleaut32.dll that is required by setup.exe is newer than the one on your system.
Update your version of c:\windows\system\oleaut32.dll and see if that fixes your problem.
Download and run;
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...us/vbrun60.exe
The above from; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192461/EN-US/#top
Further info; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/194754/#top
Alternate oleaut32.dll source; http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dl...shtml?oleaut32
"2. When I try to install the burning software, the wizard will start, but then shutdown with the following error code.
"file comct132.dll""
This should take care of the above; http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...1-9B476A8D35D2
"3. The sound card and the network card are not recognized."
If these are onboard devices as opposed to add in peripheral cards, what is the DELL product information? ie; model/unique number etc.
If these are add in peripheral cards, what is the make and model numbers of each?
