I was given a pc with windows 98 on. I have recently bought a new plug in and play keyboard and mouse but i cant use them! when ever i go onto control panel and go on to add new hardware it goes through install wizard then tells me a driver cant be found and to put in my win98 cd which i do but still nothing happens. how come it wont work???

98FE or 98SE?

Of what type are the keyboard and mouse? Standard PS2 connections? USB? Wireless?

Did you get some sort of media (CD/floppy) with these items with drivers?

What are the make and model numbers of the keyboard and mouse?

i dont know which windows it is, and the mouse has no make as far as i can see on it! the keyboard is Colorsit and they are both usb and they are ment to be just plug in and play and came with no installation disks. i have the same problem with my web cam too, which is a logitech cam and comes with a disk
I start by entering Settings then control panel, then Add new hardware.
Add new hardwear wizard comes up and i click next
Windows search for plug and play devices click next then it searches.
Is this the devices you want to install? gives option of USB Human Interface Device.Click yes/next.
It then says it is already installed but it has a problem, to view click finished.
i then click finish and a window appears with Device Status in it saying"the NKTERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver (code2)" "to fix this click update driver to update device driver" I then click update driver.
Wizard searches for iupdated drivers for USB Human Interface Device. It comes up with options *Search for better driver than the one your device is using now(reccomended)
or *Display a list of all drivers in a specific location so you can select the driver you want. i selected the first option and clicked next.
Windows will search for updated drivers in its driver database on your hard drive and in any selected locations
gives options of floppy disk drives
cd rom drive
microsoft windows update
i click next nad windows searches
it then asks if i want to install and run C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\direct.bl
The publisher cannot be determined as the object is not known to the verification trust. I click yes.
The best driver windows found is already installed for this device click back to install a different device or next to install this driver Location C:\WINDOWS\INF\HIDDEV.INF
click next and it then asks me to insert th disk labeled Windows 98 cd rom then click ok.
That done, it then comes up " the file hidclass.sys on windows 98 cd rom cannot be found. Set uo could not find a file on the specified path. If the file appears below, make sure it is correct. Click ok to try copying again." And if i click ok it just keeps repeating that. In the same box there is also and "skip file" "browse" and "details" which if i click on says "Error details the following error occured " the file was not found (error #2) set up could not finish opening file on the source disk.


i hope you can understand that!

Sorry I've been away for so long. I've had system woes myself. Two systems and I couldn't get on the net with either one.


98FE or 98SE - The date/time stamp on the majority of system files will be;

98FE = 11/24/1998 8:02 AM

98SE = 4/23/1999 10:22 PM
