hi
I have win 98 and have recently switched to bt-yahoo as an internet provider (I'm still using dial up). However, when I log off, my screen goes blue, and I get a fatal exception OE 0028:00700465. Then I have to press <ctrl> <alt> <del>. After that a message pops up saying that there has been a modem lock alert. Finally, I am informed that the BT M.L. watchdog had to be restarted. This is very annoying. I typed the long error message in the google seach field and discovered that it means that one program is trying to overwrite another, but I'm afraid that that doesn't mean much to me. Any help would be appreciated

Are you running 98FE or 98SE? The date/time stamp on the majority of system files will be;
98FE = 11/24/1998 8:02 AM
98SE = 4/23/1999 10:22 PM
If FE, are you running Norton AntiVirus on this machine?
I gather that this started after loading the BT-Yahoo?
Was the machine OK prior to BT?
Those codes can indicate programs are crashing into each other in memory.
How much free space is left on the hard drive? (You should try to have 10 - 15% of the hard disk partition space kept free.) You need room for dynamic files (which programs will move onto and off of the hard disk and data/information and back and forth into memory), and/or a good sized swap file. Is windows managing your Virtual Memory, or have you set some parameters for it?
Uninstall anything you don't, or might not use, and run Disk Cleanup to get rid of old temporary files.
Delete your temporary internet files.
Defrag the hard drive. (Defrag will tell you if Scandisk should be run as well.)
Here's a link to MEDefrag. Much better than the stock 98 Defrag. Unzip to a location of your choice and run the install batch file. I have added the ME Scandisk into the zip file as well. Same procedure.
Also check your modem settings (Control Panel - Modem). The BT install may have altered things which possibly could be better set.
There's also the possibility of a memory module going bad. You can check your memory with MemTest86.

Use the downloaded file to create a bootdisk on one of your floppies. When complete, you won't see any files on the floppy, but they are there. Just boot the machine with this floppy and run it as long as you can afford to. If there are errors, run it on one memory "stick" at a time to narrow down the possibilities. (ie; Remove all but one stick.) You may have to set your bios boot device sequence to boot from the floppy drive first.

I'm running win98se.
This problem started after I changed my provider to BT-yahoo. Before that I never had problems like this.
I have heaps of space on my hard drive; the properties of drive c:\ are 3.7GB used, 10.2 GB free.
How do I find out about memory management and swap? - I've never touched that.
I cleaned up the disk and deleted old/temporary/internet files & defragmented the drive. I didn't need to do a scandisk.
I checked the modem settings, but they didn't mean much to me. Which things might be better set?
What is a memory module? I haven't got any memory sticks, if that's what you mean.
I hope that this info is some help, so that someone can help me!

For the modem, just run the diagnostics for it from Control Panel. Click on the Diagnostics tab, then the comm port it's on, then select "More Info...". If you get a response, things thus far are OK. I'd need more modem (make/model/drivers) info and more application (BT program) info in order to research tweaking things.
Although, "in general", in Control Panel, Modems, click on the "Properties" for the modem. Select the highest speed available.
On the "Connection" tab,
1- choose "Port Settings". Ensure the "Use FIFO buffers...." box is checked. The sliders can sometimes be used to tweak unstable connections.
2- under "Advanced..." "Use error control" and "Compress data" should be checked. "Flow Control" is usually hardware. This is where knowing the BT program parameters may come in handy.
Memory modules are the "sticks" of memory installed inside your machine. Type depends on the machine. I strongly suggest you test yours using the tester I linked to earlier.
Post back on the modem settings/diagnostics results you find.
