Are you trying to reinstall Windows 98 "over the top" of your old install, or are you attempting a "clean install" (ie; formatting C: then running the install)?
Does this laptop have a floppy drive and a CDROM drive available/operable at the same time, or just one or the other?
What are you using for the reinstall of Windows? An original CD, or a "restore" CD from the laptop manufacturer?
-
If possible I would like to Windows 98 over the old one so that I can save my files.
Yes I have CDROMs from manufacturer (Gateway). I have both Restoration CD from Gateway and set of Windows 98 installation CDs from Microsoft.

Which are you using to reinstall? Gateway or Microsoft?
"... set of Windows 98 installation CDs ..."
I've never seen a "set" of Microsoft Windows 98 installation CD's. What are these?
Before you try any more reinstall attempts, try a registry restore.
Boot to a command prompt, if you're at A:\> (from a floppy bootdisk), then type in c: and hit Enter. You should now be at the C:\> prompt. Type in cd windows\command. You should now have a C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND> prompt. Then type in scanreg/restore and hit Enter. Pick a date which preceeds the problem occurance.
If the above fails;
If the current install that you want to reinstall over is the factory Gateway install, AND, the Gateway CD has an option for a non-destructive restore, you should try that first.

I tried hard to find floppy boot disks but could not find them. I have CDs. Can we do something to repair? I ran scandisk today. But still could not run win98. Could not go to command option as suggested in your previous massage.

Please answer the question I posed in #2 above;
"Does this laptop have a floppy drive and a CDROM drive available/operable at the same time, or just one or the other?"
Do you have to remove the floppy drive to insert and use the CDROM drive?
-
This laptop have both Floppy drive and CDROM They do not operate at the sametime. As I mentioned in my previous message that I have lost Windows floppy disks and only have CDROM Windows 98 second edition. I also have floppies (3-set) and CD of Windows NT.
I understand that I am providing more information you have asked. Hoping to find solution quickly.
Thanks

Hi, Sorry for being away so long.
Check this for setting up the laptop.
If you need a bootdisk, and you have access to a working 9x machine, put your 98 CD in the drive, and navigate to;
x:\tools\mtsutil\fat32ebd (where x: is the CDROM drive)
and run the fat32ebd.exe file. This will create a bootdisk from your CD on one of your floppies.
Post back with your results or any further questions/problems. I won't be gone for so long this time. ;>)
