    Angry Starting Menu

Using Windows 98SE. When booting up the process stops at the 'Starting Menu' and gives six choices: 1 Normal
    2 Logged (\Boot Log.Txt)
    3 Safe Mode
    4 Step by Step Confirmation
    5 Command Prompt Only
6 Safe Mode Command Prompt Only
Enter Choice: Time remaining 30 ( counting down to zero when it continues to load the highlighted choice, which is usually 1)

How can I stop it doing this every time it is booted up???? ASny Help would be greatly appreciated by a techno virgin!!!

Hello , and Welcome to DAL.

Does windows boot normally when you pick "1. Normal"?

If so, once you're in windows, go to Start, Run, type in msconfig. In the lower right-hand side of the General window/tab, click on "Advanced". If there is a check mark in the box for "Enable Startup Menu", remove it.

If there is no check mark, cancel out of msconfig and open Windows Explorer. Click Tools, Folder Options, then View or Advanced. (I'm booted to W2K right now so I'm going by memory here... the wording may be slightly different.) Scroll down to "Files and folders" and engage "Show all files" and disable "Hide file types of known extensions". Save these changes and close explorer. Reopen explorer and navigate to the root directory of C:. Right-click on msdos.sys and choose "Properties". Remove the check marks from "Read-Only" (& the "System" if applicable) boxes. (Again, I'm in W2k so...) Then open the file with Notepad or any other text_only editor. Look for the line "BootMenu=1". If it's there, either, change the 1 to a 0 (that's zero), or, place a semi-colon ( ; ) at the beginning of the line. Save your changes and exit.

If any of the above applies, and you've followed these steps, the boot menu should be gone on your next boot.

If any of the above doesn't apply, something is triggering the Windows 98 Startup Menu and further investigation is required.

Please post back with any results, or further questions, especially if the above doesn't apply.
